What is Recovery Coaching and how can it help me?

Recovery Coaching

Recovery Coaching helps the client to bridge the treatment, education and therapy, with community resources, and a continuum of care network that will assist in their successful transition. With the support of the RC or an addiction counsellor, the client can begin to create their aftercare plan. The prompt implementation of this plan is critical and increases the likelihood of their success in recovery.

After rehab is a critical time for someone entering an independent life of recovery. Therefore, the goal is to build recovery systems and support that will allow the individual to develop their integrity, self-esteem and self-confidence.  Having a sober companion will greatly improve the odds of success and the likelihood that the individual will live a life free from active addiction.

Major Components of Recovery Coaching

Recovery Programs

The choice of recovery coaching philosophy is a personal one, but the fundamentals remain the same: you must be committed and involved. Whether it is a 12 Step or a scientifically based recovery program, we will ensure that the client understands and is adapting the necessary principles in his or her life.  It is paramount, especially in the 12-step-based recovery programs, that an individual or client be given clear and accurate information about how these programs work. Often, well-meaning people can give poor guidance in their efforts to help. This can often lead the individual to become confused and frustrated, ultimately hampering their recovery. This is where the Recovery Coach ultimately safeguards the individual from any misguidance.

Relationship Building

Treatment is often a place where an individual will learn about healthy relationship-building strategies, but it usually isn’t until the person is actually on their own that the practice will truly begin. This is precisely where Recovery Coaching will bridge the gap between treatment and everyday life. Supporting the individual in the development of these interpersonal skills is the desired goal.

Employment & Education

Most addiction treatment centres provide a vocational or educational plan as part of their program. However, once the client has left treatment it is entirely up to them to execute this plan. Finding resources and support in the initial first steps can be challenging, and potentially leave the client feeling overwhelmed, especially in the early stages of recovery.  Thus, recovery coaching can be an immediate support to you once you have completed the addiction treatment program.

Recreation & Hobbies

Having a recreational activity is often one of the most overlooked parts of a well-balanced lifestyle for the recovering addict. Finding new associations for recreation and pleasure is essential. Whether it be sports, arts, or other active social groups, getting involved in these types of recreational communities dramatically diminishes the likelihood of relapse.   We provide Recovery Coaching for exactly these types of situations.  Whether you enjoy the gym, hiking, fishing, or any other activities that will add to your recovery path, we can accommodate a sober companion to enjoy such activities with and help build further connection to like-minded people.

Recovery Coaching

Answers to frequently asked questions about recovery coaching.

Recovery coaching is a personalised support service where a trained professional works one‑on‑one with someone in recovery from substance use disorder. Unlike clinical therapy, recovery coaches focus on practical guidance, accountability, life‑skills development, and encouragement to help clients sustain long‑term sobriety and navigate real‑world challenges.

While counselling and therapy focus on emotional healing and clinical treatment of underlying psychological issues, recovery coaching emphasises goal setting, accountability, and skill development. Coaches help clients implement strategies learned in therapy, build structure in daily life, connect with community resources, and maintain progress after formal treatment ends.

Individuals at any stage of the recovery journey — whether transitioning from inpatient or outpatient treatment, newly sober, or seeking ongoing support — can benefit from recovery coaching. Family members, partners, and support persons may also engage coaches to learn how best to support their loved one’s recovery.

Although there are different training programs you can take, in Canada there are only 2 approved trainers that are part of the CACCF (Canadian Addiction Counsellors Certification Federation). This is the umbrella that our Recovery Coaches fall under.

Recovery coaches assist with building routines, managing triggers and cravings, developing coping strategies, identifying healthy habits, reconnecting with work or education, accessing community support groups, and navigating potentially high‑risk situations. Coaches also help with planning for life events that could challenge sobriety, such as holidays or family gatherings.

A Recovery Coach is meant to be a supportive person who can guide you through the many situations that arise in recovery. Being newly sober can be uncomfortable and you may have had to severe many past relationships. Thus, our Recovery Coaches will walk with you while you gain new friendships. They will take you to meetings, they can introduce you many sober groups including sports groups, hiking groups, and musical groups. Adding fun and regaining past passions to your recovery program will make the tranisition to sobriety much easier.

The duration of recovery coaching varies based on individual needs and goals. Some clients work with a coach for a few weeks, while others may benefit from ongoing support for several months or longer. Coaches frequently revisit goals with clients to adjust the plan as progress occurs.

Yes. Recovery coaching services are provided with strict confidentiality and respect for client privacy. Coaches adhere to professional ethical guidelines to ensure a safe, supportive environment for clients to share personal challenges and progress.

Recovery coaching can be delivered in multiple formats, including in‑person sessions, video conferencing, phone calls, or a combination. This flexibility allows clients to receive support in the way that best fits their lifestyle, schedule, and comfort level.
